Friday morning ride into the City. Sun shooting over the horizon so much earlier now, I can safely stash my lights away for next four months. A friendly “hi” to Sam’s grandmother as I join the bike path near the high school. Gentle cruise through Sausalito then the climb to the bridge, keeping heart rate below 140, need to save those beats for long run tomorrow!
On the bridge, I give a thumbs up to Rob the Flag Guy. Many mornings he walks the bridge, carrying a flag and wearing a red, white and blue “USA” shirt, waving his flag at motorists who honk or shout their approval of his patriotic theme. I looked him up on the Internet a while back, and learned that he’s done this early morning bridge walk more than a thousand times, his way of expressing his patriotism and support of God-given rights. Though he grew up in Mill Valley (and went to Tam High, where my kids go), he now lives in Lodi, almost a hundred miles away. According to the article, he wakes up early (4am) a few mornings a week, reads the Bible, then drives to the Bridge. We may not have much in common besides an obsession for that Bridge, but you have to admire someone who is that dedicated to his/her beliefs.
