It should have been a miserable run. Steady rain forecasted, and it arrived on schedule. My plan (ignoring the weather), was to run for three hours. Met up with the Saturday morning crew in light drizzle. Consensus route is the steady climb up Railroad Grade, then cut across to Mountain Home Inn. Did my best to keep up with our youngest and strongest runner. Steady progress through the rain, dodging puddles on the fire road. Few runners and (wisely) no bikers out in today’s rain. As is typical, Saturday morning schedules and commitments differ, so we separate at Mountain Home. I opt for the long route along Troop 80, the rolling rock, route and crushed leaves path through pines and redwoods at Muir Woods’ northern edge. The rain has brought everything to life, and the ferns that line the trail are exploding neon green fireworks. After reaching the top of Cardiac, and emerging out of the trees, the coast is shrouded in fog and clouds, and the rain is persistent. But from here it is mostly downhill heading back down the Dipsea trail. Short climb back up to Panoramic Highway, then a final descent into Mill Valley. Three hours, 14.2 miles, and 2400 feet of climb. Even though running shoes squishing constantly the last mile or two, felt energized to have conquered my nemesis — running in the rain — and doing a long, hard run at a good 12:40 per mile pace. Then into the hot tub to expel the cold and rain from my limbs!
